Overcoming Arthritis: Ancient Truths, Natural Remedies

by Dr Don Colbert

God, the Healer, wants you to be physically healthy so you can serve Him with all your strength and enjoy life to its fullest.

Did you know that arthritis is one of the earliest documented afflictions in history? Thankfully, this ancient disease also has a remedy older than history—The Ancient of Days. God has not only provided many natural ways for you to be relieved of arthritic pain, but He has also provided supernatural healing for your body.1

If you, or someone you know, is suffering from arthritic pain, be encouraged that it’s God’s will for you to overcome it. I trust that these practical suggestions, coupled with prayer, will stir your hope, strengthen your faith, and help bring healing to your life.

Types of Arthritis

While there are many different forms of arthritis, there are essentially two main ones: rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis. In this article I would like to focus on osteoarthritis, the most common type that affects over 40 million Americans. Osteoarthritis is also called degenerative joint disease. Its main characteristic is joint pain caused by the wear and tear of cartilage and degeneration of the joint.

The main characteristics of osteoarthritis:

Usually affect people over age forty
Usually affect joints on only one side of the body at first
Cause discomfort in the joints but not usually swelling, particularly affecting the weight-bearing joints like the hips and knees
Do not usually include fatigue
Do include brief morning stiffness
Often worsen with use of the affected joints
Often include creaking and cracking of joints with movement

Overcoming Arthritis Spiritually

Arthritis can be a very discouraging disease, and your most important weapon in the battle against it is prayer. God can supernaturally heal osteoarthritis as you pray, stand on His Word, and seek Him. There are many examples of God’s healing touch in answer to prayer in the Bible. Look these scriptures up and spend some time meditating on them to build your faith in the Lord’s healing power.

I also urge you to stop listening to negative reports about your health and choose to believe that God can and will heal you. Pray in faith and surround yourself with prayer warriors who will believe with you for your healing.3

Call the elders of your church and have them pray over you and anoint you with oil.4 Then learn what you can do to help your body heal and trust the Lord to do the rest.

Overcoming Arthritis with Proper Nutrition

Two essential steps for preventing and combating osteoarthritis are drinking adequate amounts of alkaline water and eating alkaline foods such as fruits and vegetables. By drinking alkaline water and eating alkaline foods, then you can raise the urine pH to 7.0 which is ideal for detoxifying the body and help it in overcoming osteoarthrits. You can purchase pH strips, an alkaline water filter, and bottled alkaline water from most health food stores. Drinking two to three quarts of alkaline water daily is very important for maintaining cartilage, which is the shock absorber in your joints. By eating the right foods, you can avoid substances that may aggravate joints and cause the pain of arthritis. Diet is also very important to control weight, which reduces stress on joints.

Foods containing arachidonic acid should be avoided. This fatty acid works in your body to promote inflammation and aggravate already painful joints. Foods high in arachidonic acid include red meat, pork, shellfish, and all dairy products, except for those with no fat. You should also avoid foods rich in omega-6 fatty acids, such as vegetable, sunflower and safflower oils and most salad dressings. Instead, use extra-virgin olive oil.

Foods that decrease inflammation include those rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which are mostly found in fish. Good sources are salmon, mackerel, herring, tuna, sardines and trout. Three to five servings of these fish each week are recommended. Another great food that reduces inflammation is the green-lipped mussel from New Zealand. You don’t have to travel to New Zealand to get the amazing benefits of this food, as it is available in capsule form in the US. In studies it reduced the pain, swelling and stiffness in 70% of patients who have osteoarthritis.

Overcoming Arthritis with Vitamins and Supplements

Another way to promote healing and maintain good joint health is by taking certain supplements. Vitamins C and E are very important for arthritis sufferers to take because they are powerful antioxidants. They can help decrease cartilage loss and slow down the progression of osteoarthritis. Sufficient amounts would be 800 IU of natural vitamin E, and at least 3,000 mg. of vitamin C daily. Taking a multivitamin is also helpful.

A nutrient that may be effective in preventing or treating osteoarthritis is MSM. It contains high amounts of sulfur, which is vital for healthy cartilage. I recommend taking 500 mg. three times a day. Glucosamine sulfate and Chondroitin Sulfate are also wonderful, God-created substances that can help your body fight osteoarthritis by repairing damaged cartilage, providing cartilage strength and resilience, and relieving pain. Studies have shown that patients can have as much as a 71 percent improvement using these awesome supplements. The two work synergistically in improving joint health. When purchasing Chondroitin Sulfate make certain it is a low-molecular weight product as it is more easily absorbed by the body.

Overcoming Arthritis with Exercise

The next ingredient needed to bring about healing is exercise. Although physical exercise may be painful at first, it is an essential ingredient to overcoming arthritis. Exercise helps maintain flexibility and range of motion in the joints. It also strengthens your tendons, ligaments and muscles, which in turn help support your joints. Aquatic exercise is especially good for all types of arthritis since it is much easier on the joints. Walking, weight lifting and low-impact aerobics are also helpful. Don’t forget to warm up and stretch before exercising. If you don’t have arthritis, exercise can help prevent it. Be sure to consult your physician or physical therapist before starting any exercise program if you already have arthritis.

Overcoming Negative Thoughts and Emotions

Dealing with negativity in our lives is also a vital key to receiving healing from the Lord.

Negative emotions stifle faith and inhibit the body’s ability to heal. To apply God’s cure for arthritis, I believe we must address the emotional issues in our lives that may be hindering our faith. This means we choose faith over doubt and hope over discouragement. And most importantly, it means we focus on God’s healing promises instead of the symptoms we’re feeling from arthritis. The truth is, you are an overcomer, and this disease has already been defeated at the cross of Christ!

Don’t be timid about claiming God’s promises for your health. Trust His Word, and boldly come before His throne to receive grace to believe for your healing. Do what you can by eating right, taking helpful vitamins and supplements, and exercising. Then begin praising God for His power at work in you to restore, strengthen and heal every joint in your body!

Read these scriptures aloud three times a day, especially before meals and at bedtime, to overcome strongholds in your life.
